The Academy of Computer Science and Engineering celebrated Computer Science Week and the Hour of Code Wednesday, December 7th! We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.
There are nearly 700,000 open computing jobs in the US, but only 80,000 computer science students graduated into the workforce last year. Computing occupations are the fastest-growing, best paying, and now the largest sector of all new wages in the US. We at the Academy of Computer Science and Engineering are one of the few middle schools in the State to require students to learn how to code; surprisingly 47% of high schools in the US don’t even offer computer science classes.
This is why the Academy of Computer Science and Engineering is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week. More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. Our Hour of Code is making a statement that the Academy of Computer Science and Engineering will continue to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. We know that regardless of what students do when they grow up, whether they go into medicine, business, politics, or the arts, knowing how to build technology will give you confidence and a competitive edge.
